Description

Adenoject 3mg Injection is an intravenous medication used primarily in the management of certain types of life-threatening arrhythmias, particularly supraventricular tachycardia (SVT). It works by slowing down the electrical conduction through the heart, thereby restoring a normal heart rhythm. Additionally, it is utilized during diagnostic stress tests to assess heart function.

Mechanism of Action:
Adenosine is a naturally occurring nucleoside that, when administered intravenously, exerts its effects by:

  • Slowing conduction through the atrioventricular (AV) node.
  • Interrupting re-entrant pathways through the AV node.
  • Restoring normal sinus rhythm in patients with paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia.

Dosage and Administration:

Administration:

  • Given as a rapid intravenous bolus over 2 seconds by a healthcare professional.
  • The exact dosage and administration schedule are determined by the attending physician based on the patient’s specific condition and response to treatment.

Monitoring:

  • Continuous monitoring of heart rate, blood pressure, and ECG is essential during administration to detect any adverse reactions promptly.

Side Effects:

Common side effects may include:

  • Transient facial flushing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest discomfort
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness

Serious but rare side effects can involve:

  • Severe bradycardia (slow heart rate)
  • Hypotension (low blood pressure)
  • Severe chest pain or pressure

Immediate medical attention is required if any of these serious side effects occur.

Precautions:

Caffeine and Theophylline:

  • Patients should avoid consuming foods and beverages containing caffeine (such as coffee, tea, and chocolate) for at least 12 hours before administration, as these substances can diminish the effectiveness of adenosine.

Medical History:

Inform the healthcare provider if you have a history of:

  • Asthma or respiratory issues
  • Heart block
  • Hypotension
  • Seizures

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:

  • Consult a healthcare provider before use if pregnant or breastfeeding.
