ADA
An “ADA” test, which stands for Adenosine Deaminase, measures the level of this enzyme in various body fluids, most commonly pleural fluid (fluid around the lungs).
Category: Lab Test
Description
Its primary use is in the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB), particularly when TB is suspected in the pleura or other body sites like the cerebrospinal fluid (for tuberculous meningitis) or peritoneal fluid. Elevated ADA levels often indicate an active immune response, which can be characteristic of a TB infection. While highly sensitive for TB, elevated ADA can also be seen in other conditions that cause immune activation, such as certain lymphomas, autoimmune diseases, and other infections. Therefore, it’s typically used in conjunction with other diagnostic tests.
