Description

ACIVIR Injection contains Acyclovir, a potent antiviral agent used for the intravenous treatment of severe viral infections caused by members of the herpes virus family. It is particularly indicated in hospitalized or immunocompromised patients who cannot take oral therapy or who require rapid, high plasma concentrations of the drug.

Indications:

  • Herpes Simplex Encephalitis
  • Neonatal Herpes Infections
  • Severe Genital Herpes
  • Herpes Zoster (Shingles) in immunocompromised individuals
  • Varicella (Chickenpox) in high-risk patients
  • Cytomegalovirus prophylaxis (off-label, specific cases)

Mechanism of Action:

Acyclovir, a guanine analog, is phosphorylated in infected cells to its active form. It then inhibits viral DNA polymerase, stopping replication of viral DNA and limiting the spread of infection.

Dosage & Administration:

  • Administered intravenously by slow infusion (over at least 1 hour)
  • Dose and frequency depend on weight, renal function, and infection type
  • Dosage must be adjusted in patients with renal impairment

Important: Must be reconstituted and diluted before administration by a qualified healthcare provider.

  • Side Effects:
  • Local irritation at injection site
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headache
  • Renal dysfunction (in high doses or dehydration)
  • Neurotoxicity (rare, in high doses or renal failure)

 

  • Storage Instructions:
  • Store below 25°C
  • Protect from light
  • Reconstituted solution should be used promptly or stored under recommended conditions
  • Keep out of reach of children

 

  • Precautions:
  • Ensure adequate hydration before and during therapy
  • Use with caution in patients with pre-existing kidney disease
  • Monitor renal function and neurologic status during prolonged therapy
  • Only for hospital/institutional use under medical supervision
