Azelaic acid is a naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid. While its exact mechanism of action for acne vulgaris isn’t fully understood, it’s thought to:
- Inhibit the growth of bacteria like Propionibacterium acnes on the skin surface.
- Inhibit follicular keratinization, which helps prevent the development of blackheads and whiteheads (comedones).
Precautions:
- Pregnancy and Lactation: Use with caution. Azelaic acid can enter breast milk.
- Avoid contact with your eyes, mouth, and other mucous membranes.
- Do not use occlusive dressings or wrappings over the treated areas.
- Use only very mild soaps or soapless cleansing lotions for facial washing.
- If you have a dark complexion, your doctor may monitor you for hypopigmentation (lightening of the skin).
- The safety and efficacy in children under 12 years old have not been established.
Interactions:
