Description
It involves collecting all urine over 24 hours, along with a blood sample, to:
- Measure 24-hour urine protein: This quantifies the total amount of protein being spilled into the urine over a day. High protein levels in the urine (proteinuria) can indicate kidney damage or disease.
- Calculate creatinine clearance: This measures how efficiently your kidneys are filtering creatinine (a waste product from muscle metabolism) out of your blood and into your urine. It provides an estimate of your glomerular filtration rate (GFR), a key indicator of overall kidney function.
By combining these two measurements, healthcare providers can get a detailed picture of kidney health, helping to diagnose, monitor, and manage various kidney conditions such as chronic kidney disease, diabetic nephropathy, high blood pressure-related kidney damage, and certain autoimmune diseases.
